  •           I have about 27 hermit crabs right now. They make GREAT pets. I had never really remembered seeing hermit crabs until one day at the mall I spotted them. I thought they were awesome and got some along with a very large bin and sand to keep them in. I quickly got more hermitcrabs, and my moms friend made me a glass crabitat which was custom built to fit on my bathroom counter. It has small rocks in part of it, sand in another part, and a small waterfall in the middle.

After I got my crabs, it seemed to start a small craze. A younger friend of mine wanted me to get him one. I went to the place I got mine and found the largest crab they had (a smallish jumbo crab). He and his brother started their own small hermitcrab collection. Another friend also got a couple of hermit crabs. After a while, she passed hers onto the two brothers. I continued to add to my collection. The brothers were away for a little while once and unfortunately lost some crabs so they decided to pass their crabs onto a more forgiving environment: my crabitat. With the attention of several of their surviving crabs, I obtained a total of 27 crabs.

I have lost a few crabs for unknown causes or molting deaths but have not had any deaths or illnesses in a very long time. I have had about 12 or so successful molts and two failures. All deaths were earlier. I have had about crabs go streaking around the cage naked (abandoned their shell). One died later on. I coaxed them all into shells, however the one that died never would stay on the shell. The other two stayed put and made it through fine. They have all been very stable for the last 11 or so months. I have about 10 extra shells in the corner for them if they want to change although I am beginning to get low on larger shells except the VERY large shells.
